Bubbles gradientScientist and artist Dr. Peter Wasilewski is a NASA astrophysicist who captures the colors of ice. Wasilewski calls his work “Frizion” merging the words Frozen and Vision.
Wasilewski photographs ice crystals as they emerge from water with the use of polarized light created by two light filters. Light normally operates in undulating waves, but a polarizing filter changes the motion into a single direction. The second filter creates a second direction. Each direction captures different colors in the light spectrum, much like iridescent paint pigments “flip” or shift from one color to another. By controlling temperature gradients in the water, Wasilewski is able to create wildly different textures and compositions. The thickness of the ice is his color palette.
