Heafter uses a sceen and a high-speed camera to mix instant playback with footage recorded seconds earlier. seeing your appearance and actions delayed in this way, rather than instantaneously as in a mirror, you find that you begin to see yourself more as another person, and notice things about yourself that you are not normally aware of.

These eyes were used as a reference when recording subject's eye colour. The allocation of numbers to a property that varies continuously from person to person shows the scientific urge to impose a system on natural phenomenoa. Moulded eyelids were doubtless provided as an aid to realism, although they now seem to lend the object a surrealist air.

"The nature of consciousness is a subject I find infinitely fascinating. I am intrigued by the way in which neural impulses the brain, which originate from the eyes, are interpreted by the mind, and therefrom produce vision. 'The seeing mind' is inspired by this phenomenon of perception, and how we appear to see, not with the eyes, but through the eyes. The part that actually does the 'seeing' in this sculpture installation is the proximity sensor."
